Robert E. Smith Jr, or in our coaches group affectionately known as One of the Bobs, has passed away and will be missed tremendously by everyone who has had the pleasure of knowing him.
Bob was one of a small group of retired coaches back in 2013 who was instrumental in starting our Retired Coaches Association. Bob had been retired from Shasta High School and his long term commitment to teaching and coaching made it very important to him to help set up the fundraising for higher education for qualified Student-Athletes. Bob, with feet on the ground and his gentle approach, spent hours soliciting sponsors making our ongoing fundraising efforts very successful.
Bob will be remembered for his commitment to inspire others to set high goals, strive for excellence and work hard and keep moving forward. His motivation to pass these ethics along was the driving force in all aspects of his life. His students and our Scholarship recipients were so fortunate to have Coach Bob on their side.
Rest in Peace Robert E. Smith JR Coach Bob
Member Spotlight
Nor-Cal Retired Coaches said good-bye to our Member Sue Mancasola In November of 2022.
We were able to attend the December 10, Celebration of Life and pay our respects. Sue's energetic and vivacious personality will be missed. Sue was born in Kansas and arrived in Redding at the tender age of six. Her high school years at Shasta High School included many activities from Student Government to pepping up the student body as a Football Song Leader. Sue had a competitive spirit and spent many years coaching Girls Tennis at both Shasta and Enterprise High Schools. She kept herself in shape through long distance running, playing Golf and PickelBall and teaching Fitness Classes. Her active home life included raising three active children and spending lots of time with her six grand children. May she Rest in Peace.
The Nor-Cal RCA members have said good bye to three good friends this year. Their physical presence will be missed but our memories of them will live on in our hearts.
Ronald “Coach” Conley passed away on September 2nd, 2021. He was a 53 year resident of Burney. He graduated from Enterprise High School in 1960. He played football and baseball. He earned a Physical Education degree at Chico State. He coached and taught at Fall River High School and Burney High School. Ron was a great member of the Nor-Cal RCA and will be missed by all who knew him.
Denny Alfaro passed away July 11th. Denny was an active member of the Nor-Cal RCA always willing to pitch in and help with all of our fundraising efforts and our events. He would volunteer for Salvation Army bell ringing each year. He happily donated to the golf tournament raffle items. He was a mentor to a scholarship recipient each year. He attended our monthly meetings, faithfully, and was ever ready to sign up to help with any of our activities, such as hanging the banners at Riverview.
Denny had been a multiple sport participant in high school and college and became an avid golfer after getting hurt playing ball. In fact, one of the last activities we all shared with Denny was our golfing outing at Lake Redding Golf Course. His gentle smile and true friendship will be missed. Denny was a giver and will be remembered for his commitment to his community and friends.
Joe Franco, long time Shasta High School basketball and golf coach, passed away August 5th. Joe impacted the lives of students, his athletes and fellow coaches because of the lessons he taught while coaching. He demanded, from his teams, respect for the game, the rules and the officials. He expected the young athletes to conduct themselves appropriately or face consequences.
Joe's friendship with our members and his support for our efforts to help student athletes further their education was constant. We have been fortunate to have known such an honorable man.
The untimely loss of our very generous supporter, Gary Burks, with Blach Beverage, was indeed a shock to all. Gary's commitment to this community has been evident for many years. The Nor-Cal RCA has been fortunate to have Gary on board with our fundraising goals from the beginning. His enthusiasm for life and the caring that he showed everyone around him, is his legacy. We will miss this "Bigger Than Life" personality. Thank you Gary!
